Jelly Roll Race Quilts can be a lot of fun to make because they don't require what could be argued is the hardest part of quilting - measuring and cutting. For those of you new to quilting, a jelly roll is a bundle of 40 some odd precut fabric strips from one line of fabric. They are 2 ½” wide by the width of the fabric, roughly 44”. All precuts are a great way to efficiently get a little bit of a lot of different matching fabrics. A jelly roll race is when you sew these strips together to make a quilt top. This is Misty’s Jelly Roll Race and she brought it to me for quilting. Jelly Roll Race Quilt, longarm quilting by Angela Huffman
The Jelly Roll in this race

I tried to figure out what line of fabric this was, but had little luck. It is super cute with leaves, feathers, arrows, and trees as well as geometric shapes like triangles and hexagons. The colors are bright and vibrant shades of red, turquoise, and greens with dark gray and white to balance it all out. Jelly Roll Race Quilt, longarm quilting by Angela Huffman

She chose to keep similar strips together in the Jelly Roll Race to create a striped effect across the quilt. The resulting stripes and fields remind me of the American flag. Can you see it, too, or is it just me? :) Jelly Roll Race Quilt, longarm quilting by Angela Huffman

Quilting this jelly roll race

I quilted this jelly roll race with an edge to edge design called Square Spiral. This design is a classic that looks great on any number of quilt tops. It adds a great texture to a quilt, and sort of echoes the stripes of the top. But because it runs in all directions, as opposed to just vertically or just horizontally, it doesn’t fight against the horizontal stripes or need to line up with seams to look right. Good job, Misty. I look forward to seeing what you do next. Jelly Roll Race Quilt, longarm quilting by Angela Huffman
