A Quilt Fit for a Soccer Star
What's the perfect gift for a soccer star who has it all? A T-shirt quilt made with their jerseys of course!
What do you think of Sue's Soccer Jersey quilt? I love the black and white sashing and cornerstones. The nine-patch blocks remind me of the pattern on a traditional soccer ball. Isn't that clever?
At first glance, all of the jerseys look very uniform. Sue has each shirt cut to the same size blocks. But as I quilted this with a simple wide open meander, I realized some of the jerseys are cut slightly different.
This jersey in particular stood out to me. It looks like she cut the jersey to include the color blocking on the shoulder. I don't think I've seen a T-shirt quilt like that before. This must have been so challenging to put together just right, and Sue did a phenomenal job with the piecing!
Sue wanted a simple meander for the quilting, the soccer jerseys are the stars of this quilt after all! Because she offset the jerseys with black blocks I chose to quilt this with a black Glide thread. The black thread talks a little more in some of the jerseys, but a white or grey thread would be screaming in the black.
Sue lives up in Pennsylvania so I didn't get to see her reaction when she picked up her quilt, but I'm sure the recipient of this quilt is very happy with it!
Would you like to learn the tips and tricks to make your own T-shirt quilt? I'll be teaching a beginner T-shirt quilt class in March here in the Quilted Joy studio. During the class we'll learn about turning your shirts into uniform blocks so that you can make a simple 2 shirt x 2 shirt quilt top ready for quilting!
