A Little Bit of Everything
One of the things that I love best of quilting is the amount of variety. Quilting as a medium can incorporate any color, any shape, and any theme that the human mind can consider. Because quilts can be so versatile, we see quilts that are traditional or modern, sophisticated or whimsical, and subtle or flashy. We can have a little bit of everything at our disposal. The following longarm machine renters gave us just that. See what you think of them.
A Little Bit of Sentimental
This is a quilt that Judy made. Its creation started at a wedding. Can you see that many of the blocks have writing on them? She took a charm pack of plain fabric to the wedding reception with some fabric markers and asked guests to write their wishes for the happy couple on them. Then she sewed them together with other charm packs to create this top. It is beautiful and so useful. With a little bit of everything that people had to say, they will be able to keep warm and read and reread their warm wishes for years to come. Judy finished this with a paper pantograph called Toss Up. It is fun light hearted design with a flowered design that is both subtle and playful. A great touch for a sentimental quilt.
A Little Bit of Whimsy
Kathy made this cute throw with some great colorful fabric. I love the wonky plaids, playful flowers, honeycombed dots and corresponding stripes. As a result, it has a little bit of everything mixed together in matching colors. She completed this with the paper pantograph, Turbulance. It has a lot big swirls that really do draw to mind the curls of wind that could rock a plane. It adds a nice bit of roundness and circular motion to an otherwise straight lined quilt.
A Little Bit of Tradition
This is a Dresden plate quilt from Valerie. It is also sentimental. I believe this was made from the shirts of a passed loved one. Such a lovely way to keep a part of someone near you. She quilted this with a loopy meander that I believe to be a paper pantograph called Seamless, though it wouldn’t surprise me if this was actually free motion quilting. Valerie is very talented!
A Little Bit of Modern
This is also a fun and more modern quilt. Amanda made this for her son. She painstakingly hunted down each of the blue and white prints that she used for the squares that were then surrounded by gray and navy fabrics. Many of them represent things from her son’s life. There are soccer and baseball players as well as fishing and camping motifs. My favorite was the fireflies in jars. She quilted it with a hurricane panto that adds some spiky motion and texture to this top.
So we have seen a little bit of modern, traditional, whimsy, as well as a little bit of sentimental. What little bit do you think you could add to your body of work?
