Sandy made this quilt top for her DIL and did a great job as always. She used Thinking Outside the Block: Step by Step to Dynamic Quilts by Sandi Cummings as her guide for this quilt. She told me her daughter-in-law loves high contrast black and white. Sandy added the coral and blue strips that add such a great surprise to the design that is mirrored in her backing.
I drew up some options for Sandy to choose from and she chose to have circles and ellipses put on her quilt which really compliments the straight lines of the blocks. The circles are hard to photograph and you can see it a bit better on the back.
The outside border is a plain black and gave me a big area to play in. I picked a very angular and straight line design to play against the curvy circles in the main part of the quilt. I used white thread on the black fabric and I’m so glad I did. The high contrast really complements the quilt, don’t you think?
I really like that border treatment. I must save that one for my files.
Thanks, Mary! I was a little nervous doing it in white thread on black fabric but I crossed my fingers and took the leap! 🙂
