Quilting for Charity with the Nimble Thimble Guild

Every July all of our friends from the Nimble Thimble guild descend on our shop and take over all of our APQS long arm quilting machines to make quilts for our local children’s hospital.

Variety Is the Spice of Life!

I’ve written before about how much we enjoy the variety of quilts that our renters bring in to quilt. This post will reflect some of that variety – have fun! First, we have a jelly roll quilt pieced and quilted by Judy. Some call this design the “1600-Inch Quilt” because it uses a jelly roll, […]
Feelin’ Groovy, Renter Style!

Sometimes it’s fun to just focus on how the renters are using the design boards. If you aren’t familiar with these, they are boards with grooves carved in a design. A stylus attached to the longarm machine runs through the groove and moves the machine along the lines of the pattern. This is a great […]
Friends and Family, Renting Together

Quilting is an activity that many friends and family members share with one another. We love it when people come in together to rent – the atmosphere is full of excitement and fun! Valerie and Judy are neighbors, friends, prolific piecers, and frequent renters here at Quilted Joy. In fact, they are here quilting as […]
Four-Patch Frenzy!

Susan pieced this top, a design called Four-Patch Frenzy, after watching a tutorial by Jenny Doan of Missouri Star Quilt Company. She recently asked me to quilt it for her. Aren’t these fabrics fun? It looks like either the border coordinated with the block fabrics or that the block fabrics were chosen based upon the […]
More Beautiful Summery Quilts from the Renters

They just keep coming! The theme of today’s post is summertime quilting. Melissa is a relatively new renter at Quilted Joy, but she is definitely not new to the world of quilting and sewing. You may know her popular blog, Polka Dot Chair. She quilted this top earlier this summer and blogged about it here: […]
Sarah’s Bed Runner – A Different Shape of Quilt

Usually, customers bring in what we would call “bed shaped” quilts to be quilted edge to edge. Throws, fulls, twins, queens, and the occasional king quilt are all rectangular but not long and skinny. Sarah recently pieced a bed runner for a family member which was a change of pace for me as the quilter! […]
Let’s Catch Up With The Renters

Here are a few more recent finishes by our wonderful renters! Valerie pieced this interesting sampler from batik and white half-square triangle units. I’m not sure which pattern she used, but if you search for Triangle Gatherings, you’ll find a link to one half-square triangle quiltalong being offered by Lisa Bongean of Primitive Gatherings. If […]
Lots and Lots of Renter Quilts

I am continually amazed at the variety of tops that our renters bring in to quilt on our APQS longarm machines. Here are a few more from earlier this summer… Nancy made this variation on the “1600-inch” or jelly roll quilt with white 2 1/2″ squares between the ends of the strips. It is so […]
Summertime Quilting for the Renters

Wow, are there a lot of renter quilts to talk about! Let’s start with a wild West theme… Carol made this top from a cowboy-themed panel, coordinating fabrics and borders. She wanted the focus to be on the Western-themed prints and chose the meander design board and a light neutral thread. Super cute! For her […]
A Gorgeous City Sampler – Tula Meets Kaffe!

One of my long-time customers, Kathy, recently asked me to quilt this top for her. Liz, one of my longarm rental supervisors, squealed “ooh, a City Sampler!” when she saw it. (Liz’s is still in her to-be-quilted pile.) This quilt was designed a few years ago by Tula Pink and is the focus of the […]
Busy Busy Renters!

Our renters are, as always, eager to get those projects finished! Here are a few recently-quilted quilts… Donna pieced this throw-sized top and wanted to use a design with good overall texture so the blocks would stand out. She chose the orange peel design boards for her quilt and used a light neutral thread for […]
Stars, Simple and Sweet!

We show lots of complicated quilts here on the blog, but simple and sweet deserves a place too. Terry made this quilt for friends and brought it to Quilted Joy for quilting. She wanted it to show her love for this couple, pure and simple. As you can see, Terry used a two-color color scheme […]
Lots and Lots of Quarter Circles!

Look at this interesting layout! Anita used a neutral color palette and quarter circle blocks, arranged strategically, to create really fun optical illusions of circles disappearing behind each other. She must have had a blast arranging her blocks! Here at Quilted Joy, we have many wideback fabrics – over 130 total. Anita took advantage of […]
Lots and Lots of Eye Candy Quilted by the Renters

Today, I’d like to celebrate the wide variety of quilt styles that our renters quilt here at Quilted Joy. One of the best things about having the rental program is seeing everyone else’s quilts – it feeds our creativity and inspires us all here at the studio. Here are a few recently-quilted projects from the […]
Imogene’s Rail Fence

Today’s quilt, by Imogene, is a Rail Fence design. The center is based upon strip sets, and Imogene added several borders to add interest. What makes this quilt really interesting is that it is made entirely of neutrals! Because the color scheme is so simple, Imogene wanted her quilting not to overpower the quilt. We […]
Renters Working on Their Free Motion Quilting Skills

Today, let’s take a look at some renters who are improving their free motion quilting skills by working from the front of the machine. Connie quilted this patriotic star quilt with a free motion meander. While we have a design board that does the same thing, she knows that working from the front of the […]
Asterisk Not Needed Here!

Beverly brought this fun top in for me to quilt. No asterisk needed here – it’s cute without qualification! We did a little research on this, as we’re often asked about the patterns and fabrics selected by our quilting customers for their tops. The pattern, Asterisk, was published in Quiltmaker magazine in 2010 and is […]
Four More Newly Minted Renters!

We love that new students complete our rental certification course all the time. Seeing the joy on their faces after they quilt their first quilt on our APQS longarm machines makes our day. Here are some recently-certified renters and their quilts! Stella brought this sweet top in for her certification class. It is based upon […]
A Quilt for a Special Baseball Player

Sandy’s grandson loves baseball. In fact, he plays baseball for St. Xavier Catholic High School here in Louisville. When it was time for Sandy to make a quilt for her grandson, there was only one theme which would be perfect – baseball! This quilt is large at 100″ by 100″. It includes printed fabrics, all of which have […]
Here Are a Few More Renter Quilts!

Here are a few more renter quilts from this spring… This sweet heart crib-sized top was made by Kym. She had such fun animal prints with foxes and elephants. She chose to continue the theme of hearts by quilting it using our Heart Fancy pantograph. The white thread she selected keeps the top soft and light. Adorable […]
