This is a micro-lifter borrowed from JUKI's industrial machines. Set a little float and the top layer feeds in step with the bottom one, so a quilt sandwich comes out the size it went in, velvet keeps its nap, a knit hem stays flat, and the stitch length holds as you climb onto a thick seam allowance and back off it.
